Eden Homestay, a family house in Gorkhey, with grain drying in the courtyard

GORKHEY FOREST VILLAGE · 2,350 M

Eden Homestay.

A family home by the river. Stay with a trek, or come just for the village.

A SLOWER STAY

Mornings by the khola.
Evenings around the table.

Eden is a family house kept by Uden Tamang in a small village on the West Bengal side of the river that borders Sikkim. The terrace looks out over the river and forest. Start with tea and a walk through the village; lunch is at home, and dinner brings the day together.

Gorkhey is not a road-head. From NJP or Bagdogra, a jeep reaches Srikhola; from there, walk up the valley through pine and fields. A stay without a trek can come in by this route. Trekkers also arrive from Bhareng, on the Sikkim side.

THE SEASONS IN GORKHEY

Choose the season for your reason.

October–November

Clear peak views

A good window when the mountain panoramas are the reason for the journey.

March–May

Rhododendron forest

Milder days and red blooms between Phalut and the valley.

June–September

Monsoon in the valley

Rain, leeches and slippery descents pause the long treks. Eden can still host a village stay.

A DAY WALK FROM EDEN

Samanden, the quiet plateau.

A short walk from Gorkhey, the small village of Samanden opens onto wide meadows ringed by pine — trekkers call it the “Lost Valley”, and the walk there is our Silent Valley trail. Add it to a slow stay at Eden; ask Uden to show you the way.
